School is well underway as Saint Mary’s begins another year of Catholic education. Here are some important news items to keep our alumni up-to-date with all the latest from your alma mater!
It’s a Girl: Our principal, Mrs. Nietsche, began her fifth year as principal this fall. She’ll be leaving us soon on maternity leave. We offer Mrs. Nietsche and her family our prayers and support as they embark on this exciting new journey!
New Teachers: Change can be hard and Saint Mary’s lost three special teachers at the end of last year. Ms. Fiorentino (theology), Mrs. Hitchcock (math), and Mr. Shea (English) all left us. Ms. F. took a new teaching job outside of Boston as she prepares for her wedding in a few months. Mrs. Hitchcock took a position with the Southwick Public Schools. Mr. Shea finished his Masters degree and moved closer to his family.
We have the opportunity to welcome Deacon Roger Carrier (theology) who has served Saint Mary’s Parish for several years; Mr. Jason Camp, a recent graduate of Westfield State University; and Ms. Susanna Dawyot, an alumna of Catholic University of America and member of the Providence Alliance for Catholic Teachers.
Fall Sports: Golf coaches Paul and Melissa Finley led our golf team to another Western Mass championship this year. Boys and Girls soccer both made the Western Mass tournament. New cross country coaches, Mr. Camp and Ms. Dawyot, worked hard building on the success of the team.
Winter Sports: We have two new boys basketball coaches! Mr. Joe Molta will be our head coach, assisted by junior varsity coach, Ryan Sullivan (’08). Coach Molta led Southwick’s team for the last 25 years. We will welcome back Coach Breglio to girls basketball and Coach Gaudrault for hockey. Practices begin on Monday, November 26. Come to a game! Schedules can be found at www.digitalsports.net. Boys basketball plays at South Middle, girls play at North Middle, and hockey is at Amelia Park.
150th Anniversary: Saint Mary’s Parish celebrated its 150th anniversary in the past year. Mr. Lepage wrote an extensive parish history that will be featured in the commemorative book published this winter.
Drama Club: We just had our fall play, Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” at the beginning of November. Mark your calendars for the spring musical, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” on March 7-9, 2013.
Building Improvements: You won’t believe how amazing our school building looks! On the first floor, drop ceilings were installed along with new lighting. The hall is also carpeted. The second floor will be transformed next summer. A new cafeteria floor was installed. Two new entry ways were built at the front entrances. See the pictures below.
Keep in touch! To all of our alumni: let us know how you’re doing. We love to hear from our extended family. Our graduates are remembered regularly in our prayers!
